2010 AYSO Area 10/Q Coach Camp a Success!

Nineteen Advanced Coaches, 28 Intermediate Coaches, and 22 U12 Coaches were trained this past weekend at the Annual Area 10/Q Coach Camp. (Sixty-nine (69) AYSO coaches trained!)
From the feedback received, it was a terrific event. Barbara Haig did an absolutely fantastic job planning, and delivering this event (AND INSTRUCTING our U12 Course TOO!).

The crew from Region 716, Nipomo, Area 10/Qs smallest region, did an absolutely fantastic job with the food and facilities, and ALL of our regions had both students there to learn, and volunteers there to help serve food, etc.

Students were here on the Central Coast from Area 10/Q, 10/A, 10/V, and 10/W, and instructors from 10/Q and 10/A, as well as from AYSOs National organization.

It was wonderful to have support there from our National organization: National Vice President, Paula Berriz (who’s son Jason did a great job helping to instruct the goalkeeping and shooting modules), National Director of Events and Camps, Scott Gimple (who was a student in our Advanced Coaching Course), and, of course, Chair of the National Coaching Commission, Hugh McLeish (who instructed our Advanced Coaching Course).

Area 10/Q Coach Trainer, Rob Cantrell did a wonderful job instructing our Intermediate Coaching Course, and mentoring.

And, we had FOUR Advanced Coach Instructor candidates assisting with the instructing and being mentored. All did a terrific job.

The Cal Poly Men’s team did a lunch-time clinic for the coaches, and the Cal Poly Women’s team scrimmaged at the camp on Sunday, and provided our Advanced Coach Instructors a wonderful match-analysis opportunity.

Much appreciation to the three AYSO referees, Bill Csete, Greg Pisano, and Ted Ortiz, who came out on Sunday to support the coaching camp by referring the Cal Poly Women’s team scrimmage. They did a wonderful job.

AYSO is looking forward to holding the Coach Camp again next August. (They are penciling in August 12/13/14 for this camp, and will confirm the dates at our September Area meeting.)

CVSC teams perform well in July tournaments

The Coastal Valley Soccer Club would like to congratulate several of our teams on their strong performance in July tournaments. The following is a brief recap of their success:

CVSC Bulldogs, CVSC Chaos and CVSC Chelsea all brought home Championships in our club's host tournament, the Cool Summer Cup. CVSC Spartans were Finalist in the BU10 division.

CVSC United GU17 set up a busy July, attending two College Showcase Tournaments in Davis and Santa Barbara. In the Davis College Showcase, United was able to secure a position in the Championship game with a strong effort in pool play. United represented our club very well and brought home the Finalist medals after losing in finals, 0-3 to Diablo FC. In the Santa Barbara Premier College Showcase, United went undefeated, winning 3 games by scores of 4-3, 3-1 and 1-0. United continues their strong summer tournament schedule with the Mustang Stampede, Aug 7-9th.

CVSC Chaos continues to turn heads wherever they go. Chaos followed up their Cool Summer Cup championship with another Championship at the Huntington Beach Xtreme tournament in late July. Chaos outscored their opponents 21-5, going undefeated and bringing home the Championship trophy. Chaos will continue their summer tournament schedule with tournaments in Santa Barbara and Thousand Oaks in August.

Our boys were also represented well in the Championships in July as our BU14 Manchester Utd. team travelled to Cypress July 31st and played in the Cypress Cup. After a first round loss to Canyon FC (5-6), Manchester fought their way back with a 9-0 trumping of NHB Black on Saturday afternoon. A semi-final victory on Sunday morning versus Elite FC (4-2) put the boys into the Championship, where they triumphed over Santa Monica Utd 3-2. Well done Gentlemen!

Region 77 Brings It Home to AYSO Area 10/Q

Congratulations to Lompoc, Region 77, U12G, for bringing it home in the AYSO National Games Championship Game!

Today's victory comes in a 2 -1 win over Boynton Beach, FL. The games were played at the Polo Grounds in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Every two years AYSO teams from around the country are selected for invitation to the AYSO National Games. This year, three teams from Area 10/Q were selected, and two were able to accept these invitations, both from Lompoc, Region 77, a U10G team and a U12G team.

Before the National Games competition began, the players participated in a soccer-fest, playing in pickup teams with players from around the country. The soccer-fest is often a highlight for the players who attend the AYSO National Games.

This year, all the pieces came together for the Lompoc U12G team, putting them in second place in their pool, and providing them an opportunity to advance to the quarterfinals, semifinals, and ultimately to the championship game.

Nice work ladies! Congratulations to each of you!

2010 State Cup Champions: Central Coast Condors - G94

The Central Coast Condors G94 squad are 2010 Cal South State Cup Champions! The Under 15 girls team won the Governor’s tournament on April 24 in Lancaster with a Championship match win over South Coast Bayern.

Club & AYSO Participation

The SLOSC Coaching Staff has amended our AYSO participation policy for club players in our 2010 Season. We have given a lot of thought to what makes the most sense. Please see recommendations for our players at SLOSC, should they be available, interested or selected to AYSO and All-Stars.

U9-U10 Strong Recommendation for AYSO participation and All-Stars (if selected). No Restrictions.

No club league play at YDA level.

U11-U13 Allowed AYSO participation (with condition that club events have priority) and All Stars (if selected)

and only if club team does not compete in Cal South State Cup. State Cup decision by August 1. We

will provide a detailed description of what State Cup entails to our club players. Please refer to our

parent/player manual on our website www.slosoccer.com for details.

U14 Special allowance for participation based on some players starting high school in September.

Transitional Team by definition. Recommended those players entering grades 7 & 8, play AYSO (with

condition that club events have priority) and unrestricted All-Stars (if selected) and/or other sports and

activities during the high school winter sports season.

U15-U18 No AYSO Participation.

We really want to develop and maintain a healthy relationship with AYSO... it is a great feeder system for us and we are hoping our policies make sense and will be viewed as a positive step towards that relationship. We also are looking for ways to promote soccer at an early age... and develop passion and enjoyment... without over exposure to the game. G13 STORM reach Semi Finals at Cal South State Cup!

G13 STORM won all three Governors Cup games advancing through the round of 32, sweet sixteen and elite eight at the Cal Sout State Cup in San Bernardino. The "STORMers" reached the Final Four with a thrilling 3-2 Double OT, come from behind win... in the Quarter Final match... with Corona Eagles.

Trailing 2-1 with 10 minutes remaining in the match... STORM were pressing and Lauren Hutkin got the equalizer... on a low driven ball. In the driving rain... the girls carried the play and got the winner on a scramble in front of the goal... as Lexi Johnson bulged the old onion bag... from a few yards out.

The "Thirteens" pushed their 2010 cup run to 6-0-0, are unbeaten in their last thirteen matches and now stand at 27-5-7 in the overall campaign.

G13 STORM Travel to Celtic Cup January 16&17... Finish Unbeaten... Place Third!

STORM G13's traveled to the prestigious Celtic Cup in Ontario, California on January 16&17, and pushed there overall season record to 21-5-7 in Cal South play. The STORMers finished unbeaten at 2-0-2 in the tourney.

Following a tough opening match which ended in a tight 2-2 draw, the STORM girls went on to draw 0-0 with host Celtic Harps and then win their next two matches by shut out scores of 2-0 over Celtic Hoops and 3-0 over Freedom SC in the Third Place Match.

Goalkeepers Mari Stewart and Joelle Lewis split duties during the competition, with Stewart (5 saves) getting the shutout in the Third Place match. Victoria Gill ( 2 goals) opened the scoring off a feed from fellow striker, Sydney Knauer (2 goals). Riley Shannon (1 goal) and Lauren Hutkin (1 goal) rounded out the scoring.

The STORM team was anchored by the tough and organized flat back four of Kelsey Shetler, Nora Zakaria, Olivia Covello and Mic Mott. Holding center mid, Sammi Fernandez controlled the tempo along with Gill and Knauer in the middle.

Coach Bob Galarneau had these words of praise for the STORM girls... "a very solid performance and good result for us... coming off a six week break from league play"... "we worked hard to improve our possession game and play some good football... and were able to shed some rust"... "all in all, some good stuff"

Ashley Ellsworth, Chenin Dotson and Paige Cohune (1 goal) worked the flank (wing) support setting up several chances on goal. The team saw stellar work from Lexi Johnson (defender), Haley Fiscalini (forward) and Grace Wearda (defender). Outside mid, CeCe Devaney missed the tourney due to injury.

Fernandez, Knauer, Gill, Covello and Mott received All-Tournament honors. Congratulations to all the STORM girls for a fantastic run at the Celtic Cup! Coach Bob G (SLOSC Director of Coaching)

Blustery soccer weekend . . .

Madrid Preiere Soccer Club postponed it's tryouts this past weekend due to poor field conditions, and thunder. Tryouts were postponed, with Madrid Premiere hosting their next tryout event next Saturday and Sunday at Sunrise Park in Santa Maria (U9-U10 10:30am to 12:30pm, U11-U13 1:30pm to 3:30pm, and U14-U15 3:00pm to 5:00pm).

AYSO on the other hand sloshed through the Section League Playoffs over in Bakersfield California on Saturday and Sunday after a brief stoppage on Saturday for lightning. Representing the Central Coast were thirteen league season teams, three of whom emerged into the metal rounds on Sunday, and brought back the hardware to the Central Coast: San Luis Obispo's U10G team, brought home a 4th place metal; Santa Ynez's U14B team brought home a second place metal after a hard fought final match against a brilliant entrant from Cuter-Orosi; and Santa Ynez's U14G team brought home championship medals (which were presented to the team by Olympic Gold Medalist and World Cup Champion Joy Fawcett) after defeating their opponents from Santa Barbara. The U14G will represent Section 10 at the California State Games later this month.

Paso Robles Grape Crush . . . redo

So far it is looking the weather may cooperate for the make-up of the AYSO Paso Robles Grape Crush, at least for Saturday. The weather Sunday, however, it looking less promising. Good luck to AYSO Region 741 with the weather this weekend. 32 Panels is sending sunny thoughts your way!

According to their tweets: Ady's field will play rain or shine! City is trying to work with them at Barney Schwartz if they get rain. Three U12 fields Sherwood Park, plus two u10s fields. u12 field at Pifer, & u10 fields at Flamson - only if needed.

They are clearly working hard to make this happen for the kids!

AYSO Area 10/Q Caps Off the Allstar Season

The AYSO Area 10/Q Playoff is now in the books. Sixty-three teams participated in a total of 108 games last weekend. Three-hundred twenty-four referee assignments were filled by an all-volunteer referee staff lead by Area Referee Administrator, Don Ramsay.

A similar two-weekend event was hosted in December for a similar number if the AYSO Area's league season teams.

The champions in each division (both allstar and league) will advance to the AYSO Section 10 League Playoffs, and the AYSO Section 10 Allstar Playoff, respectively, in Bakersfield California at the Kern County Soccer Park. The Section 10 Playoff is held the last weekend in February, and the first weekend in March, respectively.

The champions at the Section 10 playoff (both league and allstar) advance to the California State Games, which is held the last weekend in March.

San Luis Obispo Surf 'n Turf Falls Victim to Rain

The San Luis Obispo Surff 'n Turf has been officially cancelled by tournament officials as a result of Thursday and Friday's rain storms. After bring informed by City Officials that the Damon-Garcia Sports Complex would not be available to AYSO Region 599 this weekend, Tournament Officials drew the red card, and sent off the annual tournament until 2011.

Soccer-watchers on the Central Coast are now looking to next weekend's AYSO Area 10/Q Allstar Playoffs, and a planned makeup of the Paso Robles Grape Crush the following weekend for their next soccer fix.

We'll hope the weather (and Paso Robles City Officials -- both events are scheduled to be held at the Barney Schwartz Sports Complex) cooperates!

New Web Site Launches for AYSO Area 10/Q

A new web site officially launched today for AYSO Area 10/Q. The site can be reached at http://www.area10.org, and marks a departure from the "free" Clubspaces service that the Area used to utilize.

The decision to move the site was in part related to Clubspaces' decision about a year ago to blast viewers of the site with ads from that Clubspaces apparently sold to their advertisers, and then pocketed the money to defray their costs (and make a buck).

The new site is hosted on the Area Director's own server, and is paid for through his financial support (costing the Area nothing).

The Area will sell advertising on the site to benefit the Area's programs, training, and players.

The new site is built in Joomla!, an open source content management system that is easier to use, and more reliable than the Clubspaces platform, and features a calendar that is hosted by Google. The system allows contributors to the site to submit articles directly through the site, and to update the calendar though Google Calendars.

AYSO Area 10/Q serves the approximately 6,000 youth soccer players, and approximately 2,000 volunteers that bring these programs to the kids. Area 10/Q is made up of six regions, head lead by a Regional Commissioner and a Regional Board, who have primary responsibility for delivering world class soccer programs that enrich children's lives. AYSO is defined by it's six philosophies of Everyone Plays, Balanced Teams, Open Registration, Positive Coaching, Good Sportsmanship, and Player Development.

Central Coast Youth Soccer Tournament News

So far in the 2010 tournament season, the Los Osos Shootout, the Atascadero Freeze, the Orcutt Classic, The Lompoc Spaceport Classic, and the Central Coast Classic have managed to play without too much interference from the weather.

With the last few games of the Central Coast Classic experiencing significant rain and a few of those even being rained out, that all came to an end this week. Now, we find out that the Paso Robles Grape Crush has been postponed altogether, until February 19 & 20.

Hopefully, we will squeeze by and get the remaining winter tournaments played between rain storms!

I'll try to get some tournament results posted here shortly!
